About Kraken Technologies
Kraken is the world’s only proven, end-to-end operating system for utilities’ digitalization and transformation, trusted by global energy giants like EDF Energy, E.ON Next, Octopus Energy, Origin, and Tokyo Gas. Headquartered in London and New York, Kraken manages over 60 million accounts, over 40 GW of power – from offshore wind to grid-scale batteries – and over 250,000 consumer devices such as electric cars and charging stations.

The Kraken platform’s advanced data, AI, and machine learning capabilities automate much of the energy supply chain to allow outstanding service and efficiency. These advances have redefined the utilities sector, driving a 30-fold increase in new product innovations for partners, top consumer rankings and hundreds of millions of dollars in operational savings. Kraken’s cloud-based architecture is uniquely adaptable and scalable, proven by an unparalleled track record in seamless, extremely fast on-time migrations and enabling its successful expansion into water and other verticals.
Supercharging utility field services with smarter routing
Utility field operations are often plagued by inefficient scheduling, long travel times, and missed opportunities to serve more customers. Engineers must be dispatched to install and maintain smart meters, EV chargers, solar panels, and heat pumps across vast service areas. Without an optimized system, traditional scheduling methods can lead to inefficient routing, increased travel time, and unnecessary fuel consumption, ultimately limiting the number of appointments engineers can complete in a day.

As Kraken expanded its ‘Kraken Field’ solution for field service operations, it recognized opportunities to use location technologies to improve efficiency at scale. By integrating a smarter approach to scheduling and routing, Kraken wanted to transform its field operations into a more agile and cost-effective system, ensuring that engineers spent less time on the road and more time delivering essential energy services to customers.
Optimizing workforce efficiency with Mapbox
Kraken turned to Mapbox for location-based solutions to enhance field service efficiency. The Kraken platform uses the Mapbox Matrix API to calculate travel times and distances between service locations based on live road conditions. Kraken’s AI-powered optimization engine uses Mapbox Matrix calculations to intelligently assign jobs based on proximity, availability, and skillset. Once jobs are scheduled, the Mapbox Directions API generates the fastest routes between locations and continuously updates them in response to traffic and job changes. Dynamic routing ensures field engineers stay on time and spend more hours with customers, not on the road.

A standout feature of Mapbox Navigation solutions is their zone avoidance capabilities, which allow Kraken to reroute engineers around restricted areas, such as London’s Rotherhithe Tunnel, to avoid costly fines. These intelligent optimizations have dramatically increased the productivity of field engineers and reduced operational inefficiencies.
Kraken also uses the Mapbox Geocoding API to convert between addresses and coordinates for queries to the Directions and Matrix APIs. In addition, Kraken uses the Mapbox Isochrone API to dynamically stage jobs based on driving distances, visualizing these and all assigned routes on internal dashboards with Mapbox GL JS maps and within engineers’ Kraken app using the Mapbox Mobile Maps SDKs.

Scaling field operations with AI-powered logistics
With Mapbox, Kraken is helping engineers complete more jobs each day, without wasting time on inefficient routes. With smarter routing and scheduling, the average number of jobs completed per engineer has increased from 3 to 8 per day. This allows Kraken to enable its clients to service more customers without expanding their workforce, making operations significantly more cost-effective.
Kraken is used by Octopus Energy, one of the world’s fastest-growing energy providers, to manage everything from field operations to workforce scheduling to customer billing. For Octopus Energy, Kraken supports more than 3,500 field service engineers who perform tens of thousands of smart meter reader installations, EV charge point installations, and general maintenance a day throughout the UK. With Mapbox-powered routing on Kraken, Octopus Energy has reduced driving time by 300 hours per day, allowing field engineers to cut 4 million miles and complete an additional 150,000 service appointments annually, achieving an 88% increase in urban job efficiency.

By reducing unnecessary travel, Kraken has also helped Octopus Energy to avoid 600 tons of annual CO2 emissions. These improvements support Kraken’s financial goals as well as its mission to drive sustainability in the energy sector.
The future of smarter energy solutions
As Kraken continues its expansion, Mapbox remains a key technology partner, supporting its mission to build smarter, more sustainable energy infrastructure. With AI-powered scheduling, dynamic routing, and real-time traffic intelligence, Kraken is redefining how utilities manage field operations by enabling faster service, lower costs, and a greener future.
The tangible benefits of AI-powered optimization and real-time location intelligence are already evident. In one case study in Scotland, engineers using Kraken increased their utilization from 69% to 78%. By switching from a manual schedule to an automated one using real-time routing, engineers spent more time on jobs and less time in transit. For the customers of utility companies that use the Kraken platform, Kraken’s integration with Mapbox means faster scheduling, fewer delays, and more reliable service windows.
