BMW Group is bringing next-generation navigation to its Neue Klasse vehicles, starting with the all-new 2027 BMW iX3, iX5, and 7 Series vehicles. BMW Maps with driver assistance is powered by Mapbox 3D Live Navigation, bringing lane-level guidance, live vehicle detections, and detailed 3D road context together for the first time in a navigation experience tightly integrated with the vehicle and the driving experience.
The integrated experience brings navigation and driver assistance together, helping drivers understand both where they are going and what is happening around them. In assisted driving modes, the experience also shows drivers the vehicle’s intended path, providing a clear view of where the vehicle is going next.
An important step towards highly automated driving is the intelligent interplay of navigation and driver assistance. By combining BMW Maps with advanced assistance functions, we are taking the next step towards a more intuitive driving experience — providing better orientation and greater confidence. With this BMW Group development, we are bringing enhanced real-world environmental awareness and immersive guidance seamlessly into the BMW driving experience — developed in close collaboration with Mapbox.

The unique BMW Panoramic iDrive is designed to put the right information in the right place at the right time across the Central Display, Panoramic Vision Display at the base of the windshield, and the 3D Head-Up Display floating over the road. Each display has a different size, aspect ratio, and role, showing different levels of navigation detail depending on the driver’s needs, from near-field guidance and quick-glance information to immersive interaction while parked. Every visual element follows BMW’s design language, creating a unified experience across every display. Building on the Mapbox Navigation SDK gives BMW Group the flexibility to tailor the navigation experience to each display and precisely control how every element is presented.
On the road, Mapbox 3D Live Navigation brings ADAS information directly into the map. Pedestrians, road hazards, and other vehicles detected by the vehicle’s sensors appear alongside lane-keeping and collision warnings, giving drivers a more complete view of the road around them.
Mapbox Magic Carpet shows the vehicle in its lane of travel and highlights the route ahead, helping drivers instantly understand where they are and which lane or lanes they need to be in. The intuitive visualization makes complex maneuvers easier to follow and helps drivers avoid missing a turn. In assisted driving modes, Mapbox Magic Carpet works with BMW Active Lane Change Assistant to show when a lane change is needed to follow the route, then carries out the maneuver with only a confirming glance from the driver.
Underpinning the navigation experience is the Mapbox live map, an ever-renewing map built from billions of miles of weekly drive data that inform daily map updates every day, helping keep the map current with road changes.
This next-generation navigation experience begins with the 2027 BMW iX3, iX5, and 7 Series vehicles equipped with BMW Driving Assistant Professional and an active subscription, and will expand to more than 40 BMW models.
Our mission is to make sure drivers never miss a turn. 3D Live Navigation is a major milestone on this journey. We provide location infrastructure to our customers and enable them to invent highly differentiated experiences on top of our live map. It’s rewarding to see how BMW has turned that foundation into an experience that is distinctly their own.
