Announcing Mapbox Traffic 2.0

New AI models predict accurate arrival time, display precise congestion indicators, forecast traffic hours ahead, and absorb new speed signals in seconds.

We’re excited to announce Mapbox Traffic 2.0. Powered by AI models rebuilt from the ground up, Traffic 2.0 generates accurate estimated times of arrival (ETAs) for 98% of trips, accounts for congestion at maneuvers, forecasts traffic hours ahead on the route, and absorbs new speed signals within seconds. Traffic 2.0 is available immediately as part of Mapbox APIs and SDKs.

Achieving 98% ETA accuracy on trips

At the center of Traffic 2.0 are new AI models trained on trillions of location signals. These AI models learn by comparing generated estimates with actual arrival times, continuously improving their ability to accurately predict trip completion times. This ensures that end users always see the most optimal routes with trusted ETAs.

Maneuver-based traffic

Our AI models distinguish between traffic conditions on maneuver lanes and general-purpose lanes on high speed roads. For example, a traffic jam near a highway exit may only affect the people actually exiting there – not someone continuing straight. With Traffic 2.0, end users see ETAs based on congestion in their specific lane, whether it’s a maneuver or through lane.

Forecast traffic

Traffic 2.0 predicts traffic up to 2.5 hours into the future, ensuring that conditions shown on the route accurately reflect the state that the driver will experience when they get there. This means that end users see reliable ETAs to plan ahead and reach their destinations on time, regardless of their trip time.

Lower latency

To deliver a trusted end user experience, it’s not enough to accurately predict ETAs. We need to detect changes in travel speed as well as process and deliver updates to end users as quickly as possible. Traffic 2.0 minimizes the latency between real world observations and speed data available on our APIs. Depending on traffic scenarios, latency is now as low as under 1 minute.

Get started today

Mapbox Traffic 2.0 is available now in the Mapbox Maps SDK, Navigation SDK, Directions API, Matrix API, and Traffic Data. If you’re already using Mapbox APIs and SDKs, you don’t need to do anything to enjoy these improvements, as Mapbox services already use Traffic 2.0.
