Tokyo, Japan – May 22, 2024 – Mapbox, a leading digital map and location platform company, announces its participation in the World Bank's "Understanding Risk Global Forum 2024” scheduled from June 16 to 21 in Himeji, Japan. In collaboration with Susami Town in Wakayama Prefecture and Uhuru Corporation, Mapbox will present a technical session on "Digital Evacuation Drills" utilizing advanced mapping technology.

Session Overview:
- Title: "Evacuate Immediately! Tsunami Arriving in 3 Minutes! Facing the Challenge of a Small Coastal Town Against Tsunami Threats"
- Date: June 19, 2024
- Time: 12:30 PM – 1:30 PM JST
- Location: Akurie Himeji, Himeji City, Hyogo Prefecture
Session details:
The technical session will focus on Susami Town, a coastal area anticipating a potential Nankai Trough mega-earthquake, where tsunamis could arrive within three minutes, reaching heights up to 19 meters. In partnership with local residents, a "Digital Evacuation Drill" was conducted, integrating real-time location data, tsunami inundation simulations, and 3D urban models ("PLATEAU") on digital maps. This approach visualizes successful and unsuccessful evacuations, aiding in revising evacuation plans and enhancing disaster awareness among residents. The session will also explore the applicability of these methods to other natural disasters, such as volcanic eruptions and floods.
