About HomeStory
Buying a home is one of the biggest financial decisions most people will ever make. For lenders, guiding customers through that process requires more than competitive mortgage products, it requires a connected digital experience that keeps buyers engaged from pre-qualification to closing. HomeStory helps lenders deliver exactly that.
HomeStory provides a white-labeled real estate platform for mortgage lenders, combining home search, agent matching, and collaboration tools into a single end-to-end experience. By integrating Mapbox across both customer-facing and backend workflows, HomeStory gives lenders a scalable platform that helps homebuyers discover homes, evaluate neighborhoods, and make informed decisions with confidence.
We know that for most people, buying a house is going to be the biggest transaction of their lives. We want to make that as easy as possible.

Building an end-to-end homeownership platform
HomeStory was designed to help mortgage lenders compete with large digital-first mortgage brands by offering a modern, integrated customer experience. The platform connects multiple parts of the homebuying journey, including home search, real estate agent matching, collaboration tools for agents and loan officers, and customer engagement and retention tools.

For lenders, the goal is simple: improve mortgage pull-through by keeping customers engaged throughout the homebuying process.
We are offering a complete platform for mortgage lenders to offer an end-to-end experience to their customers. We’re a central concierge helping coordinate everything throughout the transaction.

Scaling location data across millions of listings
HomeStory manages property data from roughly 600 MLS feeds across the United States, processing millions of listings that often arrive with inconsistent or incomplete location information. They were looking for a more scalable and affordable solution to accurately geocode all these listings.
To improve data quality and scale efficiently, HomeStory adopted Mapbox Geocoding. The team evaluated Mapbox against their existing provider and quickly saw improvements in flexibility, pricing, and scalability. HomeStory saw a 40% reduction in geocoding costs in the first year. They were also able to leverage permanent geocoding for support of long-lived property listings, something their existing provider did not offer.
The cost savings offered by Mapbox Geocoding, plus the permanent geocoding functionality, were definitely a significant early win.

Creating a highly interactive home search experience
After adopting Mapbox Geocoding, HomeStory expanded its use of Mapbox by replacing its renderer for customer-facing maps for web with Mapbox GL JS. The team needed a mapping platform that gave developers flexibility to build modern real estate experiences while supporting advanced customization.

Mapbox GL JS is very developer friendly. The map was never a limiting factor in what we were designing.

Using Mapbox, HomeStory built dynamic maps with interactive listing pins with pin clustering, neighborhood and ZIP code overlay, and even census tract visualizations. Even with all this data, the maps render performantly at scale. Today, HomeStory powers sites receiving millions of monthly views while maintaining fast-loading, responsive map experiences.
Helping buyers make smarter location decisions
For many homebuyers, choosing a home is about more than the property itself. It’s about commute times, accessibility, and daily lifestyle considerations.
Using the Mapbox Isochrone API and the Mapbox Directions API for routing, HomeStory introduced commute-time search functionality that helps buyers search for homes based on drive-time preferences. The platform also displays commute times directly within listings, helping buyers better evaluate homes in context.

If you work downtown and you don’t want to drive more than 30 minutes to work, you can put that into your search. It will only show homes within 30 minutes. Mapbox helps us provide the tools that help homebuyers make informed decisions.

Designing for accessibility with Mapbox Studio
As HomeStory expanded partnerships with major financial institutions, accessibility requirements became increasingly important. One partner required higher accessibility standards for map readability and contrast ratios. Using Mapbox Studio, HomeStory created a custom high-contrast map style tailored for accessibility compliance.

We were able to use Mapbox Studio to create a more visually accessible version of the map by adjusting the contrast of map elements like the labels, waterways, and roadways. Mapbox Studio made it simple to customize any element of the map.

The custom style is now deployed across multiple HomeStory-powered experiences.
Making homeownership easier
As HomeStory continues expanding its platform, the company remains focused on simplifying one of life’s most important transactions.
By combining lender workflows, agent collaboration, and location-powered home search experiences into a single platform, HomeStory helps financial institutions deliver a more connected path to homeownership.
With Mapbox powering its geospatial foundation, HomeStory can continue building scalable, customizable, and user-friendly experiences for lenders and buyers alike.
We love seeing positive comments from customers, especially first-time homebuyers. To be part of that really makes us proud. Mapbox is a big part of that success. The platform has been fitting all of our needs both customer facing and behind the scenes.
