Glossary: vector tiles

A vector tile is a lightweight data format for storing geospatial vector data, such as points, lines, and polygons. Mapbox uses vector tiles across virtually all our tools and services.

Vector tiles encode geographic information according to the Vector Tile Specification and are the key ingredient behind our vector tilesets. You can learn more about how vector tiles work and the tools behind creating vector tiles at our developer page.
