Mapnik is an open source mapping toolkit for desktop and server-based map rendering, providing algorithms and patterns for spatial data access and visualization. It is a collection of geographic objects like maps, layers, datasources, features, and geometries.

Mapnik is written in C++ and can be scripted using binding languages such as JavaScript (Node.js), Python, Ruby, and Java. It is designed for high-quality cartography, including details like subpixel anti-aliasing and advanced text placement. It has broad support for raster and vector geospatial formats, including Shapefiles, GeoTIFFs, PostGIS, and much more.
