USAToday.com Goes MapBox

October 09 2012 by Eric Gundersen

The recent relaunch and design of USAToday.com also means new beautiful maps using MapBox Streets powered by OpenStreetMap. Juan Thomassie, a senior designer on USA Today’s design, development, and data-driven graphics team, said this about the change:

“We want more control over our maps from basic locators to data-rich interactive apps. We can design some maps to be clean canvases for telling stories with data-rich overlays, and some where the terrain and the map itself is the story.

We’re working to better integrate maps into our publishing tools for our new site and on our mobile platforms, with some custom base map styles and the option to overlay custom-rendered interactive data tiles or interactive vector overlays."

Here’s a look at the new maps.

Congrats to our friends at USA Today on the great relaunch and tablet friendly design. We’re excited to see the data and mapping visualizations you have planned.
