As the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team responds to yesterday’s magnitude-7.5 earthquake in Eastern Afghanistan the satellite team is working with DigitalGlobe to source existing imagery of affected areas, specifically priority regions in the Nangarhar, Badakshan, and Takhar provinces. We are moving forward with a direct order to DigitalGlobe now.

Our goal is to update Mapbox with the new imagery from the last few months so that HOT can trace existing infrastructure in the region. Having a better map of the existing infrastructure will allow first responders, aid groups, and the government to run better damage assessments.

We will be updating HOT about our progress throughout the day. Here is a preview of some of the new imagery we have started to process:
