Making maps with massive datasets can get complex, so I wrote a manual on how you can use PostGIS + SQL with Mapbox Studio Classic to create fast, performant vector tiles.

In the guide, I explain how I set up PostgreSQL databases with the PostGIS extension, import data from shapefiles into PostGIS tables with ogr2ogr, and write some basic SQL queries infused with our PostGIS Vector Tile utility. With this guide, you’ll be able to:

  • Limit data so you can style zoom-by-zoom in Studio
  • Control point and label density across zoom levels
  • Export size-efficient vector tiles from Studio
