We’re happy to announce that John Firebaugh is joining MapBox. John’s deep expertise in JavaScript, Ruby, software architecture, and automated testing is an incredible addition to our team as we step up our Knight-funded work to improve the user experience and editing workflow of OpenStreetMap.

Over the past few months, we have worked closely with John to make improvements to OpenStreetMap.org and the iD editor. His architecture decisions and automated testing experience have been key in the advancement of these projects.

With John’s help, we’ll be able to move even faster on our OpenStreetMap work, most notably the iD editor. This tool aims to radically simplify the process of contributing to OpenStreetMap and establish itself as the standard web-based editor for OpenStreetMap, alongside the expert-level desktop JOSM editor. By lowering the barrier of entry to participation, the iD editor will expand and improve OpenStreetMap data, which is the basis for MapBox Streets as well as a vast number of diverse mapping projects.

Welcome to the team John!
