Next week on April 18 @hackergarage Guadalajara will host its first Geo Meetup that focuses on OpenStreetMap. After having done serious tracing work for Guadalajara, Mexico, it’s particularly exciting to have an opportunity to work with the local community. While remote satellite tracing allows us to quickly put streets and building footprints in vast areas of a city on a map, local knowledge is needed to add crucial elements like street names.

This is an example where Guadalajara local jackbravo has provided location names on traced street data largely provided by remote tracing user juey (main traffic arteries were provided by minoxfilm).

I look forward to join the meetup via Skype and further explore ways to grow the Guadalajara OpenStreetMap community and coordinate our efforts. In addition to getting a chance to learn about how we can support local mappers, I’ll be giving a short presentation on the work we have done so far in Guadalajara and other cities, with a focus on the import of main traffic arteries we are planning for the state of Jalisco.
