Justin began our mobile efforts, building the early iOS tools and collaborating on the MBTiles file format for use in Afghanistan election fraud monitoring in 2010.

Justin works on our open source map renderers for iPhone and Android, on internal prototyping and concepting, and on developer community outreach. He brings to the team his deep experience in internet infrastructure from the web hosting industry, native and web programming from consulting and the early App Store days, and has been helping found technology startups since the 90s.

Immediately before Mapbox, Justin ran a solo consultancy for five years building iOS, Mac, and web applications for himself and others.

In his time outside of work, Justin enjoys world travel, wildlife photography, hiking and camping, baking pies, rides around town on his Vespa, and hosting and entertaining friends and family. Justin is also active with the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network since the loss of his wife in 2016.

Justin lives and works remotely in Portland, Oregon and frequently visits our Washington, DC and San Francisco offices. He is always looking for any opportunity to meet up with Mapboxers—and our customers—around the world.
